Official embroidered patch for shuttle flight STS 51-J, the maiden voyage of space shuttle Atlantis and the second dedicated mission for the U.S. Department of Defense. While the mission was officially classified, it later emerged that Atlantis was carrying a pair of Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS-III) satellites which were boosted to geostationary orbit on an IUS upper stage.

Atlantis was launched on October 3, 1985, and returned to Earth four days later.
